15 Dec Pardon My Excess
Pardon My Excess and her colt. We nicknamed the colt Rain because when he was born, it was raining so hard in the barn on the metal roof, you could barely hear yourself think. He was the tenth foal born here and his foaling date is 4/19/15 – his sire is Creative Cause. Rain’s dam is 17 hands and the colt is already quite tall and very handsome.
The mare, Pardon My Excess is a ‘09 mare by In Excess and Valera by Quiet American. She ran mainly on the West Coast – Hollywood Park, Del Mar, and Turf Paradise with total earnings of almost $25,000 in 10 starts and a high-speed rating of 77. Here is some background on her breeding:
In Excess –Sire – An Irish bred horse who earned over $1.7 million (in the early 1990’s) with a high-speed rating of 124. In Excess sired forty-nine Thoroughbred stakes winners and was the leading sire in California in 2002 and 2003. As of 2008, he was California’s all-time sire of money-earners.
Valera – Broodmare – Only raced once, but was entered in the Keeneland September sale and her reserve was not met at $375,000.
Quiet American – Broodmare Sire – Race Earnings over $750,000 and a multiple Graded Stakes winner 1989 through 1991. He sold at the Fasig-Tipton Fall Preferred Yearling sale for $300,000. Quiet American’s cumulative totals as a sire reflect the earners of over $57 million. His most famous progeny is Real Quiet who won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness and placed 2nd in the Belmont in 1998.
Rain is Pardon’s second foal. The mare is currently in foal with Creative Cause for 2016 with an expected foaling date of 5/26/2016.
The colt has already been registered in The Jockey Club and has been nominated for the KTDF (Kentucky Thoroughbred Development Fund) and also nominated in The Breeders Cup. He was weaned on 9/21/15. The colt is currently at St. George’s Sales being prepped for the January Keeneland Sale. Both the mare and colt will be in this sale.
Other Farm News:
This is the quiet time of the year, but foaling/breeding season will be here soon. We have recently installed a camera system and will be able to keep an eye on the mares getting ready to foal and this can be done remotely. We also have three maiden/barren mares under lights presently. Most mares’ reproductive system shut down during the shorter daylight days of winter and kick back in during Spring (more hours of daylight). We “trick” the mares and provide them with between 14 and 16 hours of daylight so we can get them bred earlier in the season. We do this by putting them in the barn before dusk with the lights on until about 11 pm each night.
Keeneland January Sale: As mentioned, Pardon My Excess and Rain will be in the January sale and so will two other of our weanlings. Pardon and Rain are hip #’s 175 and 176. The dates of the sale are January 11th-January 15th and they are in the first book on the 11th.
Next foal is Takethemoneyandrun.
